Matt Graver is a CIA Paramilitary Operations Officer, working with the CIA's Special Activities Center to thwart the operations of Mexican drug cartels.

Biography[]

Though his backstory is unknown, Matt seems to be some form of ex-special operations, likely 1st SFOD-D (Delta/CAG), due to his proficiency in tactics, interrogation, skill-sets with weapons, and military-grade equipment, and his ability to strategize. At some point he earned a degree and began working as a Paramilitary Operations Officer with the CIA’s Special Activities Center.

He is introduced following the raid of the house at the beginning of Sicario, shown wearing flip flops and rather casual clothing as opposed to the professional attire of the FBI higher-ups in the room. He is presented as a "DOD Adviser", but this is very vague and confuses Kate. He offers her a chance to capture the people really behind the death house and the bombing, which Kate accepts. He tells her to meet him at Luke Air Force Base the day after next.

We see him again at Luke Air Force Base, along with his "bird-dog" Alejandro Gillick. He tells Kate they are going to El Paso and falls asleep on the plane before being able to give Kate any more details. Upon arrival in El Paso, he is greeted by his longtime friend and colleague, Steve Forsing, a supposed DEA agent. Steve tells Matt of his urinary problems and Matt tries to help him figure out what's wrong.

In the briefing room, Matt is presented as the man in charge of the operation. As they prepare to depart to Juarez, Matt gives Kate a plate carrier. Kate questions Matt as to what roles he and Alejandro truly play in all of it, asking if Matt and Alejandro are CIA. Matt dodges the question and tells Kate that she was there for a reason, and if she truly wants to stop cartel activity, this is the way to do it.

Upon traveling to Juarez, Matt and the Texas Rangers are the ones to pick up Guillermo and Matt rides with him in the SUV. At the border, during the standoff with the cartel members, Matt stays in the car to monitor his prisoner, and seems unbothered by the stand-off and the resulting shootout.

Back in the U.S., Matt attempts to question Guillermo, only for Guillermo to claim he doesn’t speak English, which Matt finds amusing. When Alejandro enters, Steve leaves and turns off the camera. Guillermo looks to Matt for assistance, but Matt coldly responds with “What do you keep looking at me for? No hablo ingles, remember?”. He and Alejandro torture and interrogate him.
